NOUN AND ITS TYPES

NOUN: Noun is a naming word. It is the name of a person, place, thing, group, material, state, quality etc.

 

For example-

a)   Rohit is standing. (‘Rohit’ - name of a person)

b)   Meerut is a clean and green city. (‘Meerut’ - name of city.)

c)   This bouquet is very big. (‘bouquet’-name of bunch)

d)   I bought a table. (‘table’- name of thing)

e)   Your honesty is known by all. (‘honesty’-name of quality)

f)    Copper is lying in the store. (‘copper’-name of material)    

Hence, any name which is related to a person, race, thing, place, state, quality, group, material etc. is called a noun.

TYPES OF NOUNS

Nouns can be divided into five types


1.    PROPER NOUN: The name of a very special or specific person, place or thing is called Proper Noun. Examples-

a)   Ram is going out.

b)   My mother called Rahul.

c)    I stayed in Hotel Taj.

d)   I visited Allora Temple.

e)   Zorawar is my pet.

f)   Mount Everest is the highest peak in world.

 Underlined bold words are Proper Nouns.

2.    COMMON NOUN: The name which is not for a special person, place or thing is called Common Noun.

Examples-

a)   Zorawar is my dog.

b)   I saw two man.

c)   Sohan visited many cities.

d)   I went to my village.

e)   Sit on you chair.

f)    This is a nice pen.

g)   I was standing at bus-stop.

h)   The tree is very big.

Underlined bold words are Common Nouns.

3.    COLLECTIVE NOUN: The name of a group is called collective noun.

Examples-

a)    Sudha presented him many flowers.

       Sudha presented him bouquet.  

c)    Geeta was picking up many books from library.

       Geeta is picking up a set of books from library.

e)    Yesterday, I saw Many people in front of this house.

       Yesterday, I saw a big crowd in front of this house.

Underlined bold words are Collective Nouns.

4.    MATERIAL NOUN: Material noun is the name of any matter which is used to prepare other thing. Examples

a)   Sudha had 1 kg gold.

b)   Trees gives us rubber which is used to prepare many things.

c)    Iron is a good conductor of electricity.

d)    My mother gifted me crockery of silver.

e)    Ayushi has a diamond.

f)    Plastic is giving threat to environment.

g)   Shopkeeper bought copper for electric work.

Underlined bold words are Material Nouns.

5.    ABSTRACT NOUN: The name of a feeling or thought or state is called abstract noun. These are the nouns that cannot be touched or seen. These are uncountable also.

Examples

a)   Kindness is a divine quality.

b)   Dev is known for his honesty.

c)    Your beauty is natural.

d)    Bravery is the ornament of kings.

e)    Love is a divine virtue.

Underlined bold words are Abstract nouns.
