Communication and Social Competence

Communication

The word communication has been derived from Latin word ‘communicare’ that means ‘the act of sharing or exchanging information, ideas or feelings’. Hence, Communication is sending and receiving of information.

Social Competence

1.      Social competence is an  ability to handle social interactions effectively. Hence, the ability to adjust behaviour and speech according to time, place, situation and people is called social competence.

2.      Social competence helps to getting well with others, being able to form and maintain close relationships, and responding in adaptive ways in social settings.

3.      Social competence involves the ability

a.             to evaluate social situations

b.             to determine what is expected or required

c.             to recognize the feelings and intentions of others

d.             to select social behaviors that are most appropriate for that given context.

Role of communication in social competence

1.      A person can not be socially competent without effective communication skills. Communication skills enable him to interact in society appropriately and impressively.

2.      Socially competent communicators understand people, and situations, use appropriate language, choose positive words, adopt suitable style to connect with people.

3.      Socially competent communicators bring positivity and make meaningful interactions with others.

Elements of social competence

Social competence  requires the following element-

1.     Context

2.     Feelings

3.     Intentions

4.     Behaviors

1.     Context:

Context refers to the circumstances and environment in which communication takes place. An individual must behave according to the environment. Behaving in a party must be different behaving in the meeting.

Similarly, while taking to strangers. Understand that-

a.     People behave in different ways according to their culture. Even western countries are different in culture from eastern countries. 

b.     Males behave in different ways than Females. They both demands separate treatment. Females are more emotional but males are more dominating, etc.

c.     More powerful people behave in formal and controlled way while other use informal gestures.

d.     Elderly people demand more good listener and respect while youth are full of energy and argumentative.

e.     Other than that, an individual can easily guess the situation by noticing  the change in his known people by their speaking style and nonverbal cues.

Importance of knowing Context in Social Competence: Understanding of context can help-

a.     Adapt communication Style- An individual can adapt himself and act accordingly. Context knowledge teaches him to communicate according to the culture, background, situation, and viewpoint of others.

b.     Interpret behavior accordingly- Context knowledge helps an individual to interpret nonverbal cues and words correctly.

c.     Navigate social situations effectively- Knowledge of Social norms and greeting patterns helps an individual avoid awkward situations and make a positive impression.

2.       Feelings:

Feelings indicates emotions and play a significant role in social competence and communication.

a.     It is crucial for social competence to sense the emotions of self and others.

b.     Understanding human emotions helps in fostering purposeful relations and resolving conflicts.

c.     Feelings can change the communication style, tone and impact.

d.     An anxious person speak unclear message, confident person win the purpose, angry person use harsh words.

e.     Hence, Social cometent communicator must manage his emotions tactfully.

3.       Intentions:

Intention refers to purpose during interaction with others. 

a.     Socially competent communicator must have clear and positive intention.

b.     He must communicate his intention clearly and understand the intention of others.

c.     Understanding the intension can help continuing the conversation. 

d.     Clarity in intention removes miscommunication.

4.     Behaviour:

The actions and responses of an individual known as behaviour in social competence.

a.     Social competent communicators behave that fits to situation.  

b.     It helps him to develop a positive environment for communication and feedback.

c.     Nonverbal cues in behavior may lead to impress other and win the situation.

Leader

1.        Any one who can lead a team successfully towards a pre-decided goal within the given time and with available resources is called a leader.

2.       A leader has leadership quality.

3.       He must have decisiveness, integrity, positivity, courage, confidence, empathy, communication skills, values, etc. to impress his team members and get success in his projects.

Leadership

1.        Leadership is the ability of anyone to lead, influence, or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organization to reach the desired goal.

2.       With the passing of time, leadership can be developed and enhanced; hence it is also considered a skill.

3.       It helps a leader to visualize the best possible way to reach a common goal.

4.       Leadership is not just one skill but rather a combination of several different skills working together to build a successful leader.

Communication is an umbrella skill including all the skills that are helpful for sending and receiving messages accurately.

3.       It involves expressing thoughts, sending information, and sharing information in an effective manner.

4.       It also includes listening actively, behaving empathetically, adopting a good speaking style according to situation

6.      In profession effective leadership communication resolves various issues and keeps the morale of the team high.
