VERBAL COMMUNICATION

With the passing of time, letters and words are developed and people started using language to express their ideas. When we use words or language to communicate our ideas and thoughts then this type of communication is called verbal communication. it is again of two types-

2.1 Oral communication: 

Oral communication is one of the modes of verbal communication that uses words for exchanging information. Here, we communicate through speech organs. Hence, oral communication is the exchange of information and ideas through spoken word. It can be done face to face or through any electronic device like a telephone. It can also be done either formally or informally.

Paralinguistic features like the quality of voice, pronunciation, articulation, tone, pitch, rate, etc play a very important role in effective oral communication. Examples of oral communication include- speech, telephonic conversation, seminars, interviews, etc.

Importance of oral communication

Merits/Advantages of Oral Communication

  • Time Saving
  • Immediate feedback/answer
  • Easy and fast
  • No fear of spelling
  • Can easily be corrected if said something not relevant
  • body language helps to convey a message
  • Effective due to the nonverbal communication

Demerits/Disadvantages of Oral Communication

  • Not authenticated
  • Cannot be used for legal record
  • Requirement of good knowledge of Paralinguistic features of Voice-pronunciation, articulation, volume, etc.
  • Cannot be stored or used without electrical or electronic devices.


2.2 Written communication: - In written communication, we communicate through writing. Writing, spelling, and correct grammar are very important in written communication. Examples- letters, reports, thesis magazines, journals, etc.

(SIMPLE, COMPOUND, COMPLEX SENTENCES)

By using the above-mentioned words you can easily frame simple complex and compound sentences.

Conversion of simple sentences into complex sentences


1. 

Simple : I was glad to know of his success.

Complex : I was glad to know that he had succeeded.

Compound: He was successful and I was glad to know it.

2. 

Simple : He is too old to run fast.

Complex : He is so old that he cannot run fast.

Compound: He is very old so he cannot run fast.

3. 

Simple : The report of his failure has surprised us all.

Complex : The report that he has failed has surprised us all.

compound: He failed and this report surprised us all.

4. 

Simple : A dead man tells no tales.

Complex : A man who is dead tells no tales.

Compound : Only a live man tells the tales for a dead man cannot speak. 

5. 

Simple : The boy with the blue shirt is our Captain.

Complex : The boy who is wearing a blue shirt is our Captain.

Compound : That boy is our captain and he is wearing a white shirt.

6. 

Simple : I still remember the joys of my childhood.

Complex : I still remember the joys which I experienced in my childhood.

Compound : I still remember my childhood and it was very joyful.

Simple : I felt sorry for finding out about his mistake. (Time)

Complex : I felt sorry when I found out about his mistake.

Compound : I found out about his mistake; therefore, I felt sorry.

Simple : Being rich, he can afford this expensive treatment. 

Complex : As he is rich, he can afford this expensive treatment.

Compound : He is rich so he can afford this expensive treatment.

Complex : He is so simple-minded that he can not see through the game.

Compound : He is very simple so he can not see through the game.

Change into Simple sentences

1. You must work hard or you will not pass the exam.

Ans. You must work hard to pass the exam.

2. The doctor admitted that he was helpless.

Ans. The doctor admitted his helplessness.

3. No one likes a man who tells lies.

Ans. No one likes a liar.

4. I shall look after her as she stays here.

Ans. I shall look after her during her stay here.

5. The more you earn, the more you should save.

Ans. Savings should be in proportion to earnings. 

Exercise 2. 

Change into Simple sentences

1. As the decision has already been taken, it is no point discussing the issues. 

            Ans.  There is no point in discussing the already taken decision.

2. Most of the poems that Kalidas wrote have been preserved.

Ans.  Most of the poems written by kalidas have been preserved.

3. He has treated me most unjustly, still I have not grumbled.

Ans.  I have not even grumbled on her unjustly treatment to me.

4. The judge found him guilty and sentenced him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment. 

Ans.  The judge sentenced him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty. 

5. The spring was late to arrive and the garden was still wearing a deserted look.

Ans.  due to the late arrival of spring, the garden was still wearing a deserted look.

6. He cried as loudly as he could.

Ans. He cried loundly to his full strength. 

Exercise 3. 

Change into Compound sentences

1. He could not win a scholarship due to his carelessness.

Ans. He was careless, so he could not win a scholarship.

2. If you do not leave this room, I will compel you to do so. 

Ans. Leave this room, or I will compel you to do so.

3. Feeling satisfied with his work, the Principal offered a permanent job.

Ans. The Principal felt satisfied with his work and offered him a permanent job.

4. The sun having risen, the fog disappeared.

Ans. The sun rose and the fog disappeared.

5. You must run very fast to win the race.

Ans. You must run very fast, or you will not win the race.

Exercise 4. 

Change into Compound sentences

1. I am sure that you have done the mischief.

Ans.  You have done this mischief and I am sure of it.

2. When the document was signed, they were all satisfied.

Ans. Document was signed and they were all satisfied. 

3. He has missed the opportunity that was given.

Ans. An opportunity was given to him but he missed it. 

4. I bought the year-book that has all the records.

Ans.  The yearbook has all the records So I bought it.

5. In spite of being short of funds, we supplied the goods to them.

Ans. We supplied the goods to them yet we were short of funds.

6. The boy can rest at home. The boy can go to school.

Ans. The boy either can take rest at home can go to school.

7. Isha called her uncle to ask him for an address.

Ans. Isha called her uncle and ask him for an address. 

8. Having finished work for the day, we left the office to see a movie.

Ans.  We finished work for the office so we left the office to see a movie.

Ans. India expects that everyone should do his duty.

2. He rested in a chair near the wall.

Ans. He rested in a chair which was lying near the wall.

3. This industry is not likely to flourish.

Ans. It is not like that this industry will flourish.

4. Going through the book, he came upon a fine story.

Ans. As he was going through the book, he came upon a fine story.

5. He entered the place too noiselessly to be heard.

Ans. He entered the place so noiselessly that he could not be heard.

Change into Complex sentences

1. These books were stolen in my absence.

Ans.  These books were stolen when I was absent.

2. The doctor did his best for the patient, but he could not save him.

          Ans.  The doctor couldn't save the patient though he did his best.

3. I press the call bell and a nurse immediately comes in. 

Ans.  A nurse comes in immediately after i press the call bell.

4. Nobody is going to hurt you, so don’t be afraid.

Ans.  Don't be afraid because nobody is going to hurt you.

5. Entrust me with the work and it will be done efficiently.

Ans.  The work will be done efficiently   if it is entrusted to me.

6. You must return home before sunset.

Ans.  You must return home before the sun is set.

7. The squirrels hid the nuts at the usual place.

Ans.  The squirrel hid the nuts at a place which is very usual.

8. The room needs to be painted and it is my opinion.

1. The clothes were put out in the morning. The clothes are not dry.

Ans. The clothes were put out in the morning, still they are not dry.

2. Walking down the road, Ravi looked at the beautiful flowers in the garden.

Ans. Ravi walked down the road and looked at the beautiful flowers in the garden. 

3. Having finished work for the day, we left the office.

Ans. We finished work for the day and left the office.
